Claudia Sheinbaum, who has been elected president of Mexico, has made it clear that she will continue with the line of the “fourth transformation” initiated by the former president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. According to her, her government will seek to continue with the programs and projects that are already underway, such as pensions for senior citizens and scholarships for young people, in addition to proposing new projects. Here are the five main areas that stand out in her government plan.

Security: A five-pronged approach

One of the main challenges Sheinbaum wants to face is insecurity in the country. To this end, she proposes a strategy based on five key points:

  • Address the causes of violence from its roots.
  • Consolidate the National Guard, which has been one of the main tools in the fight against crime.
  • Strengthen the intelligence and investigation systems.
  • Improve coordination between the different police forces, both state and federal, as well as with the Attorney General’s Office.
  • Propose a reform of the Judiciary to make it more efficient and fair.

It is logical that security is a priority, since, according to recent data, a large part of Mexicans feel unsafe in their cities.

Education: Free and with a scientific approach

Sheinbaum has said on several occasions that she wants to make Mexico a powerhouse in education, science and innovation. How does she plan to achieve this? First, by guaranteeing that all levels of education will be free, because she believes this is key to the country’s development. In addition, she promises universal scholarships for students, better salaries for teachers and more opportunities for young people to access higher education. She also wants to open more spaces for science and culture, which, according to her, would help create a more advanced country.

Economy: Prioritize social spending and raise the minimum wage.

On the economy, Sheinbaum has a social focus. Her plan is to continue investing in programs that help fight poverty and reduce inequality. In addition, she wants to reduce public debt to free up resources that can be used in priority areas. One of the most striking proposals is her intention to increase the minimum wage by 11% each year. This follows the trend of recent years, where the minimum wage has had significant increases.

Water use: A resource to take care of

The issue of water is another pillar in her government proposal. Sheinbaum recognizes that access to water is a serious problem in many parts of Mexico, especially in large cities like Mexico City, where leaks and climate change aggravate the situation. To address this challenge, she proposes a new Water Law that prioritizes access to water for human consumption. She also has plans to improve agricultural irrigation and industrial water use, with the idea of ensuring better management of this vital resource.

Energy: Boosting renewables

Sheinbaum differs from the current government in terms of her energy vision. While López Obrador has been criticized for his bet on oil, she wants to turn to renewable energies. Among her proposals is the construction of solar, wind and even green hydrogen plants. She also wants to promote the use of solar panels in homes and businesses, which, according to her, will help reduce electricity and gas costs, in addition to making Mexico an example in the fight against the climate crisis.

The big project: Passenger train to connect Mexico

One of Sheinbaum’s most ambitious initiatives is the creation of a passenger train network that will connect different regions of the country. Her first project will link Mexico City to Nuevo Laredo, passing through several states such as Querétaro and Guanajuato. The plan is to expand this network to also connect with Guadalajara and, if possible, to reach the Pacific. This work will involve the participation of military engineers and private companies, similar to the model used for the Tren Maya. According to Sheinbaum, this project will improve connectivity and offer more mobility options for Mexicans.

In summary, Claudia Sheinbaum has a clear vision of giving continuity to what is already in place, but with a focus on issues such as security, education, economy and sustainability. Her government seems to be focused on building a safer, more equal and more connected country.
