If you’re looking for a series to enjoy with your family and at the same time introduce your kids to the exciting Star Wars universe, let us recommend Skeleton Crew, a fresh proposal created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, available on Disney+. Why is it worth giving it a chance? Join us and find out!
It’s true that Star Wars fans have had mixed emotions with recent productions. After the disappointing reception of The Acolyte, many have been discouraged, believing that Disney is unsuccessfully squeezing this wonderful universe. However, as true followers of the light (and also dark) side, we always give one more chance. And Skeleton Crew surprisingly does not disappoint.
Imagine this: a 90’s movie-style adventure release, where a group of restless kids star in a story loaded with mischief, friendship and discovery. Think classics like The Sandlot, Little Rascals or My First Kiss, but set in a galaxy far, far away.
The story revolves around Wim, a boy who lives in the suburbs… yes, suburbs! But not just any suburb, but in the Star Wars universe. Wim lives with his father, a systems coordinator, and spends his free time daydreaming about the stories of the legendary Jedi. The setting is a peculiar mix: homes and schools that resemble California luxury residences with a futuristic twist from the Star Wars universe. Although at first difficult to associate with the saga, this refreshing change ends up being a success.
The conflict begins when Wim faces the career assessment exams at school. While his classmates aspire to be accountants or analysts, Wim has a different dream: he wants to help people, like a Jedi (coff coff). One morning, after missing the school streetcar, he decides to take a shortcut and stumbles upon a mysterious door with a symbol reminiscent of Jedi stories. Intrigued, he returns to the place along with his best friend Neel, an adorable alien who steals hearts with his tender personality. There, they are joined by two brave and rebellious girls who complete the perfect team.
Together they manage to open the door, which reveals an ancient ship. In an unexpected twist, the kids activate the system and end up in hyperspace. How much chaos can four kids cause on a spaceship? Quite a lot! With the help of a droid inside the ship, they make it to a spaceport in search of help to return to their home planet, At Attin.
This is where the atmosphere feels fully Star Wars: aliens, fortune hunters and scenarios that evoke that universe we love so much. But when they ask for directions, they discover that their planet is considered a “lost planet of eternal treasures”, something that leaves them completely disoriented. Captured and taken to a dungeon, the boys find an unexpected ally: a Jedi played by Jude Law, who could be key to their return.
Although the plot is simple, it is loaded with charm and endearing moments. The sets and costumes are impressive, striking a balance between the new and the familiar. Skeleton Crew has the potential to win over both little ones and parents who grew up with Star Wars.
With a total of eight episodes, premiering every Tuesday, this series is an excellent choice for an afternoon marathon with the family. If you want to share your love for this galaxy far, far away with your kids, Skeleton Crew could be the perfect start.
