James “Jim” Floros is a distinguished nonprofit leader with an impressive 40-year career dedicated to serving communities and fostering impactful change. Jim began his nonprofit journey at the World Headquarters of Project Concern International, where he played a pivotal role in community relations. Following his tenure at Project Concern International, Jim transitioned to the Burn Institute of San Diego. Initially serving as the Director of Development, he demonstrated exceptional leadership and was soon promoted to CEO. Over his 20-year tenure, Jim transformed the Burn Institute into North America’s leading burn foundation, significantly expanding its reach and impact.
In 2013, Jim assumed the role of President and CEO at the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank (SDFB), where he continued his legacy of transformative leadership. Under his guidance, the Food Bank experienced unprecedented growth, increasing its annual budget from $5 million to nearly $30 million. The organization’s financial reserves also expanded from $800,000 to an impressive $40 million. Jim’s strategic initiatives led to the tripling of children served through the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, ensuring that vulnerable youth had access to essential nutrition.
A key milestone during Jim’s tenure was the 2015 acquisition of the North County Food Bank (NCFB). His leadership enabled the NCFB to dramatically increase its food distribution, triple its service population, and significantly expand its backpack program for children in need. Under Jim’s direction, the SDFB became one of the most respected food banks in the nation. His leadership was particularly crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic when the food bank nearly doubled its service population from 320,000 to nearly 600,000 individuals. Additionally, Jim spearheaded innovative programs, including College Hunger Relief, the Diaper Bank, On the Go Pantry, Super Pantry, and the Military Hunger Relief Initiative. These initiatives addressed diverse community needs and reinforced SDFB’s role as a leader in food security and social services.
Beyond programmatic expansions, Jim also led sustainability efforts, guiding the SDFB to achieve LEED GOLD V4 certification. Under his leadership, the installation of 1,400 solar panels and the creation of an on-site composting center generated cost savings that provided an additional 850,000 meals annually.
Jim’s impact extends beyond the organizations he has led. Over his career, he has raised more than $180 million for nonprofit initiatives, significantly influencing community development and social welfare. After leaving the Food Bank in 2021, he founded Floros & Associates, a consulting firm dedicated to strengthening nonprofit organizations and advancing community-driven initiatives.
