In a time when personal pursuits often take center stage, moments that bring people together in the name of compassion and community service shine especially bright. One such evening unfolded last Saturday in Chula Vista, California, as family and friends of Flavio Borquez gathered for a heartfelt dinner at Garbatella Osteria—a night dedicated not only to exceptional cuisine but also to an extraordinary cause.

Hosted at the elegant and inviting Garbatella Osteria in the Otay Ranch Town Center, the event featured a beautifully curated three-course Italian dinner, with every dollar raised going to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) San Diego Visionaries campaign. The setting was as meaningful as the mission. The restaurant—whose name blends the Italian words “garbata” (gracious) and “bella” (beautiful)—is known for its warm hospitality and authentic Roman flavors. It served as the perfect backdrop for a gathering centered around giving back.

Guests were treated to a culinary experience that reflected the heart and soul of Italy, including dishes like smoked beet carpaccio, crispy chicken Milanese, and a decadent limoncello cake for dessert. The flavors were bold and comforting, and the atmosphere was filled with warmth, laughter, and the music that carried stories and memories through the air. But it was the purpose behind the evening that made it truly unforgettable.
The LLS Visionaries campaign holds deep significance for many who attended. It funds life-saving research and provides crucial support for individuals and families facing the challenges of blood cancers. For Flavio Borquez, the evening marked more than just a fundraiser—it was a celebration of survival, hope, and the unwavering support of his loved ones. With the strength of his devoted wife, their baby daughter, his incredible parents, and the vital assistance of LLS San Diego, Flavio has triumphed over leukemia. Now, inspired and grateful, he’s committed to helping others on their journey toward healing.

This special night was made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Claudio Robertson, who organized the dinner in honor of their nephew. Their dedication, along with the outpouring of support from the community, is a powerful example of how acts of kindness and unity can leave lasting impacts. Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Miranda Novak represented this amazing non-profit in such a beautiful event.
Events like this remind us that giving back doesn’t always require grand gestures—it simply requires heart. Whether it’s through hosting a fundraiser, supporting a cause, or showing up for a loved one, we all have the capacity to create change. When communities unite for a greater purpose, everyone benefits.
La Revista Binacional was honored to attend this inspiring event and looks forward to continuing its support of Flavio, his family, and the incredible work being done by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of San Diego.
