Get ready! Squid Game 3 premieres June 27 — here’s a quick recap to refresh your memory

Get ready to not sleep tonight! Because this June 27 Netflix premieres the third and final season of The Squid Game. The South Korean series that gripped the world with its twisted childish games and social critique returns for the last time… and promises to do it big.

Before you start the marathon, let’s take a look back at what happened in season 2 and what you can expect from this thrilling denouement.

Where did season 2 leave off?

After the global phenomenon that was the first installment, Season 2 was no slouch in intensity or drama. Gi-hun, our 456th player and protagonist, decided not to keep quiet after surviving the hell of the games. Instead of using his prize to start over, he returned with a new goal: to take down from the inside the cruel machinery that organizes this deadly competition.

But things didn’t turn out the way he expected.

The second season showed us a more calculating Gi-hun, thirsty for justice and willing to risk everything. Joining him were new faces: a trans player with military experience, a former soldier, a single mother and even a crypto influencer. The team tried to rebel against the masked ones, and for a moment, everything seemed possible… until betrayal came from within.

The plan fell apart when player 388, in charge of getting weapons, got cold feet and abandoned the group. Chaos ensued, and to top it all off, the feared Front Man (who pretended to be another player) revealed his true identity, betraying the team just at the most critical moment. The result: a massacre.

Only Gi-hun and his childhood friend managed to survive, but not for long. In one of the most devastating scenes of the series, the Front Man murders Gi-hun’s friend without mercy. The season ends with Gi-hun crying, helpless, and completely heartbroken.

Season 3: the last battle!

The third season kicks off right where the previous season left off: Gi-hun waking up alone, defeated and with his soul in pieces. Guilt consumes him, but it also drives him. This time it’s not just about revenge: he wants to end the game once and for all.

As revealed by Netflix, this installment will consist of six episodes full of tension, strategy, and new, even more ruthless trials. Players will have to face even more complex physical and psychological games, in which every decision could cost them their lives.

In addition, we will see how the Front Man, played by the brilliant Lee Byung-hun, takes back control of the game as he welcomes the VIPs, those mysterious figures who entertain themselves with the suffering of others. But something seems to be changing: even he begins to doubt his role.

On the other hand, detective Hwang Jun-ho continues his quest to uncover the secrets behind the island, unaware that within his own team there is a traitor.

What games will we see this time?

The previews have given us some clues, and we can already tell that the creativity of the creators reached another level. The terrifying Young-hee doll has been seen making a comeback, this time with her own partner, Cheol-soo, and a giant rope! There are also scenes of the players running through mazes of doors and alleys, in what looks like a chase game.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk confessed that this time he wanted to push the games to the limit to reflect the darker side of human beings. This is the most intense season of all, and it’s not just because of the gore and suspense, but because of the moral dilemma the characters will face: how much are you willing to lose to survive?

The returning cast (and a few surprises!)

Lee Jung-jae returns as the iconic Gi-hun, and Wi Ha-joon also reprises his role as the detective who won’t give up. Returning characters include:

  • Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man.
  • Kang Ha-neul as the 388 player (will he redeem himself?).
  • Park Sung-hoon as the trans player 120.
  • Jo Yu-ri as the pregnant player 222.
  • Im Si-wan as the player 333.
  • Kang Ae-shim, who plays a heart-breaking mother.

The creators have already warned: this season is going to make more than one of us cry. So get your tissues ready.

The definitive end?

Yes. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk himself has been clear: this is the last season. There will be no fourth installment, at least for now. The story is meant to close here, with a clear message: in a world where desire, competition and inequality push us to the limit, do we have any hope of building something better?

Beyond the action and violence, this series has always wanted to make us reflect. And if this last season promises anything, it’s to leave us with intense emotions and tough questions.

Conclusion: get ready for the big finale!

The Squid Game 3 is not just the continuation of a story: it is the culmination of a saga that changed television forever. With more drama, more action and an even bigger dose of social criticism, this final season promises to be a closure on par with the phenomenon that conquered the world.

So… do you dare to get back in the game?
