Uziel Muñoz — The Mexican Titan Who Made History in Tokyo

When we talk about perseverance, discipline, and passion for sports, the name Uziel Muñoz now shines brightly in the history of Mexican athletics. At 30 years old, this shot putter from Chihuahua stunned the world by winning a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, becoming the first Mexican ever to medal in a throwing event at a world championship. And he didn’t just win — he shattered his own national record with a throw of 21.97 meters.

The way it happened was nothing short of dramatic: on his final attempt, Muñoz catapulted from fourth to second place, leaving the crowd at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium in awe. He was only surpassed by the American Ryan Crouser, the undisputed king of the event. But for Uziel, that throw felt like pure gold. “It tastes like gold to me,” he said with tears of joy after the competition.

This achievement didn’t come overnight. Muñoz has spent years perfecting his craft: he’s been an eight-time national champion, Central American and Caribbean Games champion in 2023, a finalist at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, and placed eighth at the Paris Olympics. Every step paved the way for this historic moment.

His story is also a powerful reminder that dreams aren’t defined by physical comparisons or outside expectations. Uziel himself has admitted he’s not as tall or as massive as many of his rivals, yet that never stopped him from pushing beyond limits and reaching nearly 22 meters. “There were years of effort, injuries, training under the sun, sleepless nights… but it was all worth it,” he shared.

More than winning a medal, Uziel has reignited hope for future generations. “We’re putting throwing events back on the map in Mexico. There’s so much talent here—we just need more opportunities and belief in ourselves,” he said with pride.

With this achievement, Mexico now has 14 medals in the history of the World Athletics Championships, though most have come in race walking. Thanks to Muñoz’s determination, the spotlight is finally turning toward throwing events—long overlooked but now impossible to ignore.

After his historic performance, Uziel expressed a simple yet heartfelt wish: to return home, hug his wife, and enjoy a well-earned vacation. Because behind every record are countless silent sacrifices, endless hours of effort, and dreams built together.

Uziel Muñoz didn’t just win silver—he opened the door for others. He proved that with hard work, faith, and heart, limits can be broken. And that Mexican talent is destined to shine on the world stage.
