When inflation hits home it not only affects your bank account but also your health.

This year, we have been struggling with prices rising everywhere from gas to the food you put on your family’s table.

Grocery shopping can be a stressful event when you’re sure your dollars will not stretch out as they used to.

That is why we have here some tips that can help you organize and spend wisely when you are at the supermarket.

  1. Do not rely on coupons. Sometimes they are a trap for getting you to spend more.
  2. Make a list of what you need for your week’s meals and household items, and stick to it.
  3. Check the “clearance” aisle. You would be surprised on what you can find for less money.
  4. Try plant-based meals or “meatless dinners” like simple pasta with cheese or great salads.
  5. Sign up at your grocery store for that preferred client or rewards card that you can use with just your phone number.
  6. Buy items on sale that you can freeze for a later date.
  7. Track what you spend before you get to the cash register.
  8. Buy some items in bulk. Perishables are not recommended in bulk if you are a small family.
  9. Buy the store brand or generic.
  10. Go with a full stomach. We tend to buy more food when we shop hungry.
  11. Check your receipt. Make sure they did not charge you twice for something (or that the correct price was charged).
  12. Pay with cash. That way you know exactly how much to spend (and do not go over that amount)
  13. Look for your grocery store’s weekly specials and plan your meals around those items.
  14. Recycle your leftovers and be creative. Remember them when shopping so you can buy food to complement them.
  15. Avoid buying pre-packed items.

During these times of continuous inflation, we need to be one step ahead. This can be done starting in your own personal budget. Good luck!
