Sister Cities International US-Mexico Mayors’ Community Summit

Sister Cities International is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1956 inspired by President Eisenhower’s speech on citizen diplomacy. He spoke about how international affairs should also be taken care of by the citizens not only government officials. He envisioned creating bonds of peace between citizens of cities united one way or the other. President Eisenhower reasoned that bringing diverse cultures together would build stronger partnerships and lessen conflicts.

Sister Cities International started having summits a few years back, starting in Guadalajara, Mexico and in 2020 in El Paso/Cd Juarez. Due to the pandemic, it was suspended for 2021 but everyone is happy that this 2022, San Diego/Tijuana will host the US SISTER CITIES MAYORSCOMMUNITY SUMMIT from October 11th to the 13th.

This binational event kicked off on Tuesday, October 11th with an opening ceremony in Balboa Park Organ Pavilion.

The scattered raindrops did not scare the attendants (thankfully the event was hosted in Mingei International Museum, in the heart of San Diego’s Balboa Park).

Mayors and diplomatic citizens gathered to greet important people of the community and San Diego’s mayor Todd Gloria and Tijuana’s mayor Montserrat Caballero gave a welcoming speech to all local and visitors from around the world.

The amazing networking, fine wine and charcuterie boards were the perfect scenario for Sister Cities International board members (Dr. Mcquary; Peter Svarzbein; Mario Porras) were hosting all attendees.

The Summit will continue Wednesday October 12th in sister city Tijuana and summit will close on Thursday October 13th in San Diego where everyone attending is hopeful on building bilateral relations and formal partnerships that may result in trade and investment leading to stronger shared visions for future generations.
