The first week of January brought tragic events in the United States that have shocked the country. Two devastating incidents on the same day left multiple victims and raised fears of possible terrorist attacks.
Mass shooting in New Orleans
During New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans, a vehicle ran over a crowd on Bourbon Street, leaving at least 15 people dead and 35 injured. The person responsible was identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran. According to authorities, Jabbar intentionally drove a Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck into pedestrians after dodging a police car. He also fired at responding officers, wounding two before being shot and killed.
An Islamic State flag and two improvised explosive devices in portable coolers were found in the vehicle, leading the FBI to investigate the incident as a possible act of terrorism. Jabbar had posted videos online expressing his allegiance to Islamic State and his desire to carry out attacks.
The victims include local residents and tourists who were participating in the festivities. Among the deceased were Martin “Tiger” Bech, a former Princeton University soccer star, and Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, a young aspiring nurse. President Joe Biden called the attack “despicable” and expressed his support for the families affected.
Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas
On the same day, a Tesla Cybertruck van exploded in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, killing the driver and injuring seven people. Authorities identified the person responsible as Matthew Livelsberger, a 37-year-old active duty soldier. The investigation revealed that the vehicle was loaded with gas cylinders, fuel and fireworks, which were intentionally detonated from inside.
The FBI is investigating whether there is any connection between this incident and the New Orleans hit-and-run, as both involved military veterans and occurred on the same day. Both the van used by Jabbar and the Las Vegas Cybertruck were rented through the Turo platform, which stated that it found no criminal history on the renters.
These tragic events underscore the importance of reinforcing security measures and continuing to investigate possible threats. Authorities are working hard to clarify the motives and connections between the attacks, as the country mourns the loss of innocent lives and shows its solidarity with the victims and their families.
