*There are some regulations that travelers easily do not comply with, such as importing accompanying pets.

With the arrival of the holiday season at the end of the year, people who have plans to travel should know what the customs and baggage allowances are in order to avoid breaches that warrant sanctions.

The foregoing was indicated by Dr. Octavio de la Torre de Stéffano, president of the corporate TLC Asociados, who stated that there are benefits and requirements that passengers of the merchandise that make up their luggage and the customs franchise must comply with.

In the first place, he explained, a passenger is any person who introduces foreign trade goods upon arrival in the country or when transiting from the strip or border region to the rest of the national territory.

“This benefit is aimed at national or foreign passengers on international trips, as well as passengers from the strip or border region bound for the rest of the national territory,” he noted.

New or used merchandise that is part of the luggage of passengers on trips and that they must bring with them, goods for personal use such as cameras, electronic agendas, among others.

“The goods that make up the luggage of passengers on international trips have the facility of not complying with the Official Mexican Standards,” said the tax lawyer.

In this sense, he explained, pets may be imported without paying taxes, complying with requirements such as that they be companion pets, with their grooming and hygiene accessories, as well as animal health certificates.

Meanwhile, the customs franchise that passengers may apply on trips is $300 USD by land or $500 USD by sea and $500 USD during the “Héroes Paisano” program; as far as the goods are acquired in the strip or border region, the amount is $300 USD, provided that it is credited with the CFDI issued in the border areas.

“The franchises of the members of the same family may accumulate, if they arrive in the national territory simultaneously and in the same means of transport,” he said.

He stressed that passengers will accredit the value of the goods that are part of their franchise, with supporting documentation that expresses their commercial value, in addition, the franchise may not be applied to alcoholic beverages, carved tobacco and automotive fuel.

Finally, Dr. Octavio de la Torre said that merchandise that is not part of the baggage or that exceeds the customs franchise must undergo customs procedures, including simplified procedures, as appropriate. For more information you can write to [email protected].
