Federal government declares “Mexican Wine Day”

Ensenada, B.C. January 12, 2023.- The Baja California Provino Committee is pleased to announce that thanks to the efforts of the national wine sector, represented by the Mexican Vitivinicola Council (CMV), it was possible to support the initiative to declare “Mexican Wine Day” being October 7.

Negotiations with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development began in 2022. On January 10, the Federal Government issued the declaration in the Official Gazette, which will allow this agribusiness to be commemorated each year as a sign of its importance in our country’s economic and social sphere.

Currently, in Mexico, an area of ​​35,823 hectares is allocated, from which around 452,927 tons of grapes of all vocations and more than 73,000 tons of industrial grapes are obtained, which allows the production of almost four million boxes of wine per year in fifteen vine-producing states.

The wine sector represents the motor of development. It is the second source of employment in the Mexican agricultural sector, with more than 500,000 jobs, according to figures released during the 43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine, held last month in October 2022 in Baja California.

Mexican winemaking has gained ground worldwide and, in the last three years, has obtained an average of five hundred medals per year, according to the document signed by the President of the Republic and the federal head of Agriculture. In turn, he highlights that Mexico has enormous potential to produce high-quality grapes, as it has the ideal soil and climatic conditions for cultivation in different regions.

As a wine-promoting organization in the Baja California Provino Committee, we are proud of this recognition of the development of our sector and its economic and social impact on the generation of foreign currency and jobs. “Mexican Wine Day” represents a key element for its strengthening and an opportunity to position this drink in different markets and continue promoting the culture of wine at the national level.
