With summer fast approaching, so will the arrival of the year’s biggest blockbusters in cinemas near you. From superheroes to singing sirens, it’s safe to say that the scarcity-ridden cinematic landscape of the pandemic era is firmly behind us. Here are the five summer movies of 2023 we cannot wait to see.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
May 5, 2023
The first one out of the gate, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will mark the swansong of our beloved ragtag bunch of misfit heroes. With James Gunn off to resuscitate DCEU, the zany team will go on one last mission that will surely bring some bittersweet moments. But a new foe Adam Warlock will make sure it won’t be a smooth journey. There’s no telling if we’d ever see Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, Nebula, and Mantis again – so this one’s definitely a must-watch!
Fast X
May 19, 2023
The family is back, bigger than ever. In this penultimate installment before the saga’s end, Dominic Toretto leads his growing family to take down new and old enemies. Charlize Theron’s Cypher is still causing trouble three movies in, while Jason Momoa plays a man from Dom’s past who is out to seek vengeance. With John Cena and Jason Statham returning to beef up Dom’s team and Brie Larson joining the vehicular extravaganza, it’s safe to say everybody in Hollywood, sans Dwayne Johnson, is ready to rev it up!
The Little Mermaid
May 26, 2023
After 34 years, we’ll return under the sea with Ariel, Flounder, and friends. This time, in live-action. Halle Bailey will make her much-anticipated debut as the young siren who just wanna be where the people are. Directed by musical veteran Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into The Woods, Mary Poppins Returns), expect to see the soundtrack we grew up singing along to relived in glorious, eye-popping cinematic reimagining. Melissa McCarthy co-stars as Ursula, while newcomer Jonah Hauer-King portrays every 90’s girl’s cartoon crush, Prince Eric.
Barbie
July 20, 2023
Come July; we’ll all be in the Barbie world where life in plastic it’s fantastic! Margot Robbie as Barbie is the most pitch-perfect casting decision ever, while usually-melodramatic Ryan Gosling will be really interesting as Ken. Very little is known about the storyline of this movie, but with the Oscar-caliber talents of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach behind it, it seems to be in safe hands. Simu Liu, Issa Rae, and Emma Mackey also co-star.
Oppenheimer
July 20, 2023
On the very same day, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will blast into theaters – creating a meme-worthy showdown between two polar opposite films. Biographical movies tend to have moderate ambition, but this is Nolan we’re talking about. There’s nothing he cannot make grand! Oppenheimer charts the life of the eponymous nuclear inventor, played by Peaky Blinders’ Cillian Murphy. It also boasts an enviable supporting cast, from Emily Blunt to Florence Pugh to Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., in his return to acting after a three-year break.
