Renfield is an upcoming movie directed by the mad genius behind The Lego Batman Movie, Chris McKay, starring Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, and Adrián Martínez. The film is set in New Orleans and centers around Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and his servant Renfiel (Nicolas Hoult).
It is a horror-comedy film that is said to be inspired by Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula.” The plot centers around Renfield, Dracula’s loyal but tortured aide. For more than a century, Renfield has served as Count Dracula’s personal assistant, attending to his wants and delivering him new victims. Renfield has the notion while hiding out in New Orleans to go to a support group for those in codependent or abusive relationships and subsequently kill the abusers. Renfield is uneasy because these individuals weaken Dracula and seek innocent people’s blood. However, as Renfield falls deeper under the vampire’s spell, he begins to question his own sanity and his loyalty to his master.
Now, please be warned that you cannot take your kids to see this movie, as there’s a lot of blood. By just watching the trailer, you can notice how much blood there would be in it. And let us just mention that this film had a lot of intense violence. There were times when I had to look away from the screen because of how graphic the blood and violence were (and I’m a mature adult).
Now, let’s talk about Nicolas Cage’s performance. Renfield has received mixed reviews. Some critics have praised his performance as Dracula, with one review stating that Cage is “perfectly cast as Dracula and really sinks his teeth into the role.” Another review mentions that Cage’s performance is great, but the film itself is a “sloppy mess.” However, one review mentions that the movie is better when Cage is on screen and suffers when he is not. Cage himself has stated that he based his performance on cats and snakes. Overall, while some have praised Cage’s performance, the film’s mixed reviews suggest that it may not be his best work.
It may be worth watching for fans of Nicolas Cage or horror-comedy movies, but it is impossible to say for sure. As we recommend you to see the film for yourself.
In conclusion, Renfield is a darkly humorous and over-the-top absurdist film. Despite all the gore and silliness, this movie actually has a sincere and motivational message and also features some excellent scenes and brilliant performances. It probably won’t win any Oscars, but you might enjoy watching it nonetheless!
