Once again, another review from La Revista Binacional, this time of the movie that was just released last June 2nd, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse“. And what can we say, WOW, just wow! We all know that when a movie is pretty good, like “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was, it’s a challenge to be surpassed by the sequel. However, we are pleased to inform you that “Across the Spider-Verse” exceeded all our expectations. Undoubtedly SONY is positioning itself as one of the best production houses, surpassing the art of animation and creating trends film after film, dethroning Disney’s as #1 animators.
The Multiverse has been a favorite theme of Marvel movies, as they proved with the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” films. But it is indisputable that the two Spider-Man movies produced by SONY have taken advantage of the multiverse theme, turning their works into cult movies and not simple fanservice as “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was.
Well, we already mentioned the animation. What other things make this movie great?
- Diversity: The movie shows an authentic family atmosphere, and the humor is clever. Miles is from Brooklyn with New York/Puerto Rican parents, and we love that the characters are non-traditional and embrace their diversity. Not to mention it’s adorable to hear Miles speaking Spanish.
- Humor: The type of humor in this movie is appropriate for all ages. It’s not your typical movie that has to resort to cursing or obscenities to make an adult audience laugh. Making this movie one of the most suitable for family viewing.
- Characters: “Across the Spider-Verse” gives us a glimpse into the lives of other Spider-Mans besides Miles Morales. We can learn more about the sad origin story of Gwen Stacy (Spider-Woman), the incredible life of Pavitr Prabhakar who our Indian Spider-Man, and the hilarious perspective of Spider-Punk. By the way, Spider-Punk will make you laugh in every scene he appears in.
- Effective storytelling: For a film with such a complicated theme as the multiverse, “Across the Spider-Verse” is remarkably efficient in establishing each universe’s various characters and problems.
And last but not least, Oscar Isaac’s voice acting. As Latinos, we couldn’t be happier to see Spanish-speaking characters on the big screen and within a community as beloved as Spider-Man fanaticism. We are more than proud for Oscar Isaac to be the voice of Miguel O’Hara, a Spider-Man of Mexican origin and one of the leading roles in this sequel.
Overall, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” distinguishes itself from other Spider-Man films with its unique storytelling, impressive visual effects, humor, and diverse cast of characters. It’s a must-see film for fans of the superhero genre and animation enthusiasts alike. And despite the thousands of Spider-Mans in this universe (and all others), Miles Morales has undoubtedly become the favorite of millions.
