Tijuana – Robie and Alejandro Flores are participating in the San Diego Latino Film Festival, Edition 32, to present the documentary, ‘The In Between‘, which will be screened on Saturday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. atAMC Mission Valley – Room 2.

The Flores brothers are part of a new border generation, a group of filmmakers hailing from Texas who are challenging conventional narratives about the region’s communities through innovative and artistic cinematic representations.

In 2017 I decided to return to Piedras Negras, Coahuila border with Eagle Pass, Texas, to document what the border looks like through the people who live here, from the perspective of people living on both sides. Little by little I developed from a portrait of a border community, to an exploration of the memory of what my upbringing on the border was like, and to search for those memories I had with our little brother Marcelo who passed away. Through this, we are reconstructing those characteristic moments of what it is like to live on the border,” Robie Flores, writer, director, editor and director of photography, told Así es la Nota.

Through her own personal and family journey, director Flores delicately reveals a nuanced and unexpected portrait of the U.S.-Mexico border, Robie offers a humanizing perspective that captures the vitality of a thriving bicultural and binational community, celebrating the resilience and spirit of its residents.

For his part, Alejandro Flores said, “I am the producer of the film, I studied Business in Austin, Texas, and worked in the corporate world for several years. Until in 2018, Robie tells me: ‘We have a dream of making films together, why don’t you quit your job and we make this film.’ After going through a loss as deep as we did, I thought I was investing so much time in a future that is not guaranteed. So I took the path of adventure with the people I love. In the movies, in the media or in the news, you don’t see our border or culture reflected, so I thought it was cool to be a part of this story.

We wanted to tell a story that is about family, the experiences we shared as children and the bonds of community, this, in any country in the world we have that same experience. It was to make a love letter to our family, brother, childhood and community that doesn’t have the opportunity for a warmer reflection. For people who haven’t had the opportunity to visit the border, it’s an invitation to make them feel at home,” added Robie, who began filming in March 2017.
