1 min read

Humberto “Beto” Gurmilan Jr. is a passionate advocate for inclusivity, a seasoned media professional, an educator, a self-published author, and a passionate speaker. His career spans multiple fields, including journalism, education, public service, and community leadership, all driven by his commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities.

A Chula Vista Ca. native, raised in Tijuana, Mex. Beto’s life changed at the age of 15, after a surfing accident left him paralyzed from the chest down. However, his passion for life and resilience pushed him to pursue his dreams rather than be defined by his injury. His love for storytelling led him to a successful career as a sportscaster for Telemundo, where he covered major sporting events and became a well-respected voice in Spanish-language sports journalism.

After years in broadcasting, Beto transitioned to education, where he now serves as a professor at Southern New Hampshire University, sharing his expertise in media, public relations, and communication with the next generation of storytellers. His work in education extends beyond the classroom, as he frequently speaks at events and conferences about overcoming adversity, inclusion, and the power of perseverance.

In addition to his work in journalism and education, Beto has been active in public service. In 2019, he was elected as an at-large member of the San Ysidro School District Board, serving until 2022 and helping to shape educational policies for his community. He also served as the Press Secretary for San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas, where he played a key role in regional communications and community engagement. Currently, he serves as the Communications Manager for Sustainability and Innovation projects at San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), focusing on advancing sustainable initiatives that benefit the region.

Beto is also a self-published author, using his writing to inspire and connect with others. His book reflects his personal journey, resilience, and the lessons he has learned along the way. His experiences as a person with a disability, a journalist, and an advocate shape his storytelling, making his message one of hope and empowerment.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Beto is the founder and director of the Gurmilan Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities through grants, programs, and community events. His foundation embodies his mission to create an inclusive world where disability meets opportunity.

Despite the challenges he has faced, Beto remains deeply passionate about surfing. Although he can no longer ride the waves in the traditional sense, his connection to the ocean remains strong, through adaptive surfing, and he continues to find ways to be involved in the surfing community. Surfing represents more than just a sport to him—it is a symbol of resilience, freedom, and the endless possibilities that come with perseverance.

Through his work in media, education, public service, and nonprofit leadership, Beto continues to inspire and create meaningful change, proving that with passion and determination, no obstacle is too great.
