This month, we proudly spotlight a trailblazing leader whose work continues to elevate the nonprofit sector and inspire the next generation of Latino professionals. Karla Torosian, founder and CEO of Redbone Recruiting, exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose, authenticity, and cultural pride.
A native Californian and proud first-generation American, Karla’s roots are deeply intertwined with the stories of resilience and migration. Her father was a refugee from Cuba, and her mother immigrated from El Salvador—two distinct journeys that converged in a household where Cuban culture, family unity, and hard work were cornerstones. Raised alongside her Cuban grandparents, Karla developed a deep sense of identity and commitment to community. Over 25 years ago, she made San Diego her home, where she not only built her career but also raised her family.
Karla’s professional path is driven by her passion for inclusive leadership. With more than two decades of experience working closely with nonprofits, she recognized the need for recruitment strategies that go beyond simply filling roles—they must reflect the communities these organizations serve. In 2023, she launched Redbone Recruiting, a San Diego-based firm with a mission to help nonprofits thrive by connecting them with talented, mission-aligned leaders. Redbone Recruiting marks a new chapter in her journey—one rooted in purpose and backed by years of insight. Though newly established, the firm is already earning recognition for its ability to identify executives and senior professionals who create lasting impact.
Throughout her career, Karla has remained a natural connector—someone who doesn’t just match people with positions, but who sees the full potential in both individuals and organizations. Her ability to understand the unique dynamics of nonprofit leadership has made her a trusted advisor across the sector. Her work is grounded in the belief that leadership should reflect the diversity and strength of the community it serves, and through Redbone Recruiting, she has placed countless leaders in roles that empower change from within.
But Karla’s commitment doesn’t end with her business. She actively gives back to her community in meaningful ways. She mentors diverse women professionals through LEAD, provides guidance and support to LGBTQIA+ foster youth, and partners with workforce programs to help young people navigate their early careers. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and panels, sharing her knowledge and encouraging others to envision themselves in C-Suite roles. Her ability to inspire is matched only by her willingness to roll up her sleeves and do the work.
Her dedication and influence have not gone unnoticed. Karla currently serves on the board of the San Diego Equality Business Association and was named a 2024 LGBTQ+ Leader of Influence as well as a 2024 LGBTQ+ Latina Business Leader—recognitions that speak to her dual impact in both the LGBTQ+ and Latino communities. Most recently, she was selected as part of the Chicano Federation’s 2024–2025 Leadership Training Institute, where she’s contributing to shaping the next wave of Latino changemakers.
Looking ahead, Karla remains focused on expanding her reach, continuing to build bridges between talent and opportunity, and advocating for leadership that looks like the communities being served. She understands that representation matters—not just in rhetoric but in decision-making roles, boardrooms, and executive leadership.
Karla Torosian is today’s Latino Excellence, not only because of the business she’s built, but because of the lives she’s impacted. Her story is one of purpose, perseverance, and passion—and a powerful reminder of how our heritage can be the foundation for meaningful, lasting change.
