Katya Echazarreta: The First Mexican Woman in Space

In a field historically dominated by men and where Latin representation has been scarce, Katya Echazarreta has emerged as an inspiring figure. An electrical engineer, science communicator, and commercial astronaut, she became in 2022 the first Mexican woman to travel to space, marking a turning point for science and space exploration in Latin America.

From Guadalajara to the World

Katya was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1995, and emigrated with her family to the United States when she was seven years old. During her early years abroad, she faced challenges with language and cultural adaptation, but soon stood out for her curiosity and discipline.
She studied Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and later completed a master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Career at NASA

Echazarreta worked at NASA as an engineer on major projects, including the Perseverance Rover sent to Mars and the Europa Clipper, which will explore one of Jupiter’s moons. Her work focused on instrumentation and electrical systems, demonstrating her technical skill in missions of the highest complexity.

The Leap into Space

In June 2022, Katya flew aboard the New Shepard NS-21, a rocket operated by Blue Origin, the company founded by Jeff Bezos. The mission was brief but historic: lasting just 10 minutes, it placed her among the select group of Latin American astronauts and, most importantly, established her role as a pioneer for Mexican women in space.
Her journey was made possible thanks to the Space for Humanity program, which selects leaders to experience space travel with the commitment of sharing it and creating positive impact in their communities.

Science Communicator and Role Model

Beyond her technical career, Katya has become a science communicator. She participates in international conferences, educational projects, and mentorship programs for girls and young people interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
Her message is clear: science and exploration have no borders or gender, and every step she takes is dedicated to inspiring new generations.

A Promising Future

Katya Echazarreta represents not only a personal achievement, but also a symbol of what perseverance and education can accomplish. Today, she continues to be involved in space projects, technology, and educational initiatives, positioning herself as a bridge between the scientific community and the Latin American public.

Her story is a reminder that space is no longer an unattainable dream, but an open horizon for those who dare to dream and work for it.
