Getting ready for Hurricane Hillary

1 min read

Preparing for a hurricane involves several steps to ensure your safety and the protection of your property. Here are some guidelines to follow:

1. Stay informed: Monitor weather forecasts and updates from local authorities to stay informed about the hurricane’s path and severity.

2. Create an emergency plan: Develop a plan that includes evacuation routes, designated meeting points, and emergency contacts. Share this plan with your family and make sure everyone understands it.

3. Stock up on supplies: Gather essential items such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, first aid kits, medications, and important documents. Have enough supplies to last for at least three to seven days.

4. Secure your home: Trim trees and bushes, secure loose items in your yard, reinforce windows and doors, and consider installing storm shutters or plywood to protect against strong winds. If advised to do so, shut off utilities like gas, electricity, and water.

5. Evacuation: If local authorities issue an evacuation order, follow it immediately. Be prepared to leave your home and seek shelter in a safe location inland away from the storm’s path.

6. Communication: Make sure you have a way to stay connected during the hurricane, such as a charged cell phone, portable battery packs, or a battery-powered radio. Keep emergency contact information handy.

7. Safety precautions: Stay indoors during the storm and away from windows. Avoid using candles and use flashlights instead. Listen to local news and official announcements for updates and instructions.

Remember, every hurricane is different, and it’s essential to stay updated and follow the instructions provided by local authorities.
