Take care of your mental health in December: Manage stress and holiday emotions

3 mins read

We know December is crazy. Between the gatherings, the gifts, the dinners, and even the blaring Christmas carols, it’s easy to feel like a runaway reindeer. The holidays are a beautiful time, but they can also bring a lot of stress and mixed emotions. So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed or a little off, you’re in the right place! Here are some practical tips to help you get through December calmly and even enjoy it.

You don’t have to do everything (or please everyone)

Sometimes we feel like we need to be at every dinner, buy the perfect gift for everyone and even decorate the house as if it were a Pinterest competition. Spoiler: it’s not necessary! Prioritize what really matters to you and learn to say “no” when something just doesn’t fit your energy or time. It’s okay to leave things off the list; in the end, December is for enjoyment, not exhaustion.

Breathe (literally)

When you feel like stress is winning, stop for a moment and breathe. Do it with me: take a deep breath in through your nose for a count of 4, hold it for 4 seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6. Do this about 5 times and you’ll see your mind clear a bit. It’s like a mini reboot for your brain.

Give your emotions space

December can be complicated because, in addition to joy, it can also bring nostalgia, sadness or anxiety. Maybe you miss someone, or family gatherings are tense. And you know what, it’s okay to feel that. You don’t have to be happy all the time just because it’s Christmas. Allow yourself to feel and talk to someone you trust if you need to.

Make a plan, but be flexible

Having a plan for the holidays can be super helpful, but don’t be 100% committed to it. Everything may not go perfectly, and that’s okay. Plan simple things: “Today I’m buying gifts, tomorrow I’m baking cookies”. Break tasks into small steps so they don’t seem like gigantic ones. And if something doesn’t go the way you expected, breathe (again) and adapt.

Find moments for you

With so much noise and movement, it’s important to take breaks for yourself. Take some time to read, take a walk, or just watch your favorite holiday movie with a cup of hot chocolate.

hot chocolate. It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 minutes or an entire afternoon, the important thing is that you recharge your energy.

Don’t overload yourself financially

Sometimes we think that gifts or big parties are the key to a perfect December. The reality is that the most important thing is time and connection with people. Handmade gifts, symbolic details or even just writing a nice letter can be just as (or more) meaningful than something expensive. Your pocketbook and your peace of mind will thank you.

Maintain your healthy habits (or at least some of them).

It’s easy to forget to take care of your body between so many delicious meals and crazy schedules, but you don’t need to be perfect. Try to get enough sleep, stay hydrated and move your body even a little bit.

This is not to “compensate” for the excesses, but to make you feel better and have more energy.

Surround yourself with what is good for you

If there are people, activities or situations that drain you, try to avoid them or limit your time with them. On the other hand, seek out the people and things that fill you with joy. Sometimes just seeing Christmas lights, listening to a song you like or calling a friend can change your day.

Ask for help if you need it

If you feel the pressure or emotions are getting the better of you, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Talk to someone you trust or seek out a mental health professional. There is nothing wrong with needing support; in fact, it is an act of courage and self-care.

December can be a hectic month, but it’s also full of beautiful moments. Take it easy, enjoy what you can, and don’t forget to take care of yourself in the process – you deserve it!

And if at any time you need a reminder that you’re doing a great job, here it is: you’re doing amazing, and everything will be just fine.

Happy holidays! 🎄✨
