San Diego, Ca.- The San Diego Latino Film Festival presented on March 14 and 15 an intimately raw and magical journey through the life, mind and heart of the iconic artist Frida Kahlo. Told through her own words for the first time, drawn from her diary, revealing letters, essays and printed interviews, and brought vividly to life through lyrical animation. It premiered on the Prime Video platform and the Latin Film Festival, Edition 31 on March 14.

The director of Peruvian origin, Carla Gutiérrez, recently made the documentary film (duration 87 minutes) ‘Frida’, to which she said: “I arrived in the United States at the age of 14, and I am currently Director and Editor. I came to the Latin film festival to present the film ‘Frida’, by the great Mexican artist, of whom many of us are passionate about her art, on this occasion we are presenting the life of Frida Kahlo through her own perspective and using her own words, so she is telling them her story.”

The material that Gutiérrez used exists, they are letters that she sent, in addition to a very in-depth investigation by a production team that Carla relied on to make the film. “From the letters, writings, diaries and interviews that he conducted at the end of his years, my team located hundreds of documents, even the little notes that he sent to his mother since high school, which we can read and hear very intimately from his voice, his own feelings and reactions that I had through my own experiences.”

“I have always felt close to Mexican culture, because I know Latin American culture, and Peru is the other capital of the Spanish colony, perhaps we share a little of the Catholic culture with which Frida was raised. This film is made by a Latin team, for me the collaboration of Mexicans was very important. We finished the film in Mexico, both the animation team and the sound design, there is a team of women from different places to inject the spirit and heart of Mexico into this film, and of course based on a historical context,” explained the director. of Frida.

“I want the audience to see Mexico through her eyes, to have the experience of this Mexican arriving in New York. All this comes from work that has been very strong and deep. The voice is Fernanda Echeverría, she is an incredible actress who has done a lot of theater and film, the audition she gave us was a combination of emotions that was like listening to a mature woman who has suffered a lot, but maintaining that childhood curiosity and his rebellious spirit, especially her passion for life despite physical suffering. Working with Fernanda was incredible,” said Carla.

The film takes the viewer on a magical journey that transports you to 1920 in Mexico, where they can see the trolleys and cars in the center of Mexico City, as well as Frida’s art, learn about her childhood, and even meet Diego Rivera. . The premiere in Mexico is on May 9 in theaters.
