San Diego Labor Leader’s Vulgar and Racist Attack on County’s First Latina Chairwoman Sparks Outrage

1 min read

San Diego’s first Latina Chairwoman and county supervisor faced a vulgar and mocking attack from a prominent San Diego labor leader, sparking outrage and demands for accountability from community leaders. The incident, initially reported by Arturo Catanares of LaPrensa.org, occurred on Tuesday, April 30, 2023, during a rally organized by labor leaders outside the San Diego County Administration Building. The rally aimed to drum up support for their favored candidate for Chief Administrative Officer.

Brigette Browning, the head of the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council, seized the platform to single out San Diego County Chairwoman Nora Vargas, weaponizing her ethnicity in a disparaging manner. Browning’s remarks began with derogatory taunts, referring to Chairwoman Vargas as “la chingona” and culminated in an attempt to incite a chant of “no mames Nora”, baselessly accusing her of engaging in backroom deals and corruption, despite no evidence or prior accusations.

The use of “Chingona” in this context is particularly egregious, as it traditionally denotes a woman of intelligence, fearlessness, and efficacy. Browning’s distortion of the term, flipping its meaning to imply the opposite, adds a layer of insult to her attack on Chairwoman Vargas.

Furthermore, Browning’s attempt to initiate a chant of “no mames Nora” is deeply inappropriate and offensive, especially in a public setting. The phrase carries a vulgar connotation, translating to “stop sucking dick,” and has no place in civil discourse, let alone in a professional environment like a rally organized by labor leaders. Such language not only reflects poorly on Browning herself but also undermines the integrity of the labor movement and the values it purports to uphold.

The swift backlash from community leaders reflects a firm stance against the racism underlying Browning’s remarks. Calls for Browning to issue an unreserved apology have intensified as the fallout continues, underscoring the community’s rejection of such divisive and offensive behavior.
